In principle it is the same operation method as used for the treatment for cataract, only the indications are different.
Initial changes in the lens of the eye occur at the age of 40- 45 when people experience the need for reading glasses. Lens surgery is gaining more and more popularity all over the world as a way to decrease dependence on glasses or even get rid of glasses in people over the age of 40. Refractive lens replacement surgery is technically the same as cataract surgery, but it has a different indication. The aim of refractive lens replacement surgery is to decrease the patient’s dependence on glasses. Cataract is clouding of the lens that occurs sooner or later in almost all people.
This is an intraocular surgical procedure where the cloudy lens is removed with the help of ultrasound (phacoemulsification) and replaced by an intraocular lens that has been individually chosen for the patient and is inserted into the person’s own lens capsular bag. The surgery will be performed under local anaesthesia and takes 10-25 minutes on average for one eye. The surgery will be performed in the operating theatre under surgical microscope.
It is possible to insert into the eye multifocal lens that make it possible to see without eyeglasses both at short and far distances. We use in our clinic multifocal artificial lenses of Tecnis, Ophtec Precizion Presbyopic and Zeiss type that are the best ones among those produced in our opinion.
So-called toric lenses are used for the correction of astigmatism.
It is also possible to use so-called monovision, which means that one eye is corrected to see at long distance and the other at short distance.
In the absence of contraindications like for example diabetes, lens replacement operations are performed in both eyes on the same day. This ensures that recovery period is shorter and more convenient for the patient.
